Funny Farm of Grant
Hello Sweetwater fans! I am ready to get at it, need to be busy. My spinach has gotten as big as it’s going to get thanks to the colder weather, so I’m going to harvest it and hope the next batch is bigger! It should be since the temps are going up, finally. I’m going to search out the ramps in the woods so I will have those too. Spinach and ramps are a good start to a good meal.
Spinach $5.00 bag
Ramps $5.00 bunch
Hope to see you there Saturday! Text me at 734-945-0720 and I’ll reserve some for you. Thanks, see you Saturday!

Sweetwater Verified at Muskegon Farmers Market

Laughing Tree Bakery
This will be the final week of the Indoor Market!  Last chance to grab soup (Potato Leek this week) and our Grilled Sandwiches!  All 5 sandwiches will be available to close out the indoor season.
We will have our usual selections of sourdough breads and pastries.
Please note: Beginning May 3, outdoors, we will be making several price changes in keeping with ingredient costs. We appreciate your understanding as we work hard to keep our baked goods affordable!

The Pasturage of Montague
Truly, spring has arrived: the peepers in our pond are deafening. I like the “natural silence” but for those not accustomed to their cacophony, it can be disturbing.  We also have an astonishing number of pollywogs. Apparently, the former owners used to raise frogs and sell frog legs so we have whopper sizes bullfrogs that add to the chorus. Now, they feed our green and blue herons that frequent our shore. But we can change that. Let me know if you’d like us to sell frog legs!
Otherwise, stick to the lamb, pork, chicken and turkey found on our list at https://thepasturage.com/order.

The Pasturage of Montague
How-dee. I built a new type of brooder to keep our chicks warm. It’s called an Ohio brooder, or hover brooder, and it’s supposed to help prevent fires from the heat lamp. The number of people that I know personally that have burned down their house or barn or shelter (not to mention the animals), plus the one time we had a near fire ourselves (thankfully Dan caught it while it was only smoke), have convinced me to upgrade. Heat lamps seem so innocent.  But wow, can they do damage in a hurry.  Other types of small scale supplemental heat aren’t much better based on reviews I’ve read, so… cross your fingers that Ohio will come through!  We’ll use it for our laying hen chicks, meat chicks and turkey poults.
We still have chicken and turkey in stock now, from whole birds to cuts of every kind. Plus lamb and pork. Check out our list at https://thepasturage.com/order or call or email. Anyway you want to communicate is fine with me… well… except pinstagram or facetok… I’m not really equipped to mediate socially.
Tootles!

Sweetwater Verified at Muskegon Farmers Market

The Pasturage of Montague
We don’t really have spring on the farm. We have mud. Although watching rain fall on our pond is one of my favorite things, I know it leads to impassibility.  Like anywhere on our farm.  People are always surprised by this to which we reply “Claybanks township is aptly named.” Despite the brownie batter sucking our boots off with every step, the sheep are dropping more lambs and the rabbits are starting to kindle.  So, I guess spring does appear on our farm after all!
Easter approaches. Keepus in mind. Options abound. Our list can be found here: https://thepasturage.com/order
You are always welcometo call, text (23 one 288 6 one one 2) or email (thepasturage@gmail.com)an order, too. And if you can’t access the list, I’m happy to assist you viatelephone or email. We are located at Muskegon Farmers Market, 9-2pm, indoorsfor four more weeks!
Take care,
Julie

Supporting Small Local Organic Food Producers since 2005!

MARKET NEWS

On March 7th, the new secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, canceled two USDA programs supporting many local and organic farms, the Local Food Promotions Assistance (LFPA) and Local Food for Schools (LFS) programs. Launched in 2021, these long-overdue programs that mostly supported small local farms (many of which are farming organically) were in stark contrast to those historically introduced by the USDA to support “get big or get out” chemical agriculture. With local food banks and schools cancelling local contracts and farmers who had planned to sell into those programs already planted for the season – uncertainty is the rule right now.

All that said, it is vitally important that we who appreciate our local farmers do everything we can to support them. Buying locally helps; preordering locally helps even more!  And thank you.

Shady Side Farm returns with specialty flours & beans for preorder! The Woven Farm returns with first of spring greens! Liberty Family Farm & Pine Row Farm join them! Crow’s Nest is back with garlic & onions!

We will be at the Sweetwater Market on March 22nd from 10am -11am.   Order cut-off is 10pm on March 21st.
We will be offering the following:
Locally Grown Rabbit – Whole   Average 2.7 lbs  $8.00 per LB

USDA Organic Black Garlic.   Black Garlic starts off as regular white hardneck garlic.  Black Garlic is commonly referred to as being fermented, in fact, it’s not fermented.  It is a curing/drying process. The process of making black garlic is slow and done over a number of days. This completely changes the flavor, texture, smell, and even increases the health benefits of the garlic.  This USDA Organic garlic is  grown and processed in the USA.  $10.00 per 3.75 oz Resealable Pouch We will be offering a limited amount of taste samples weather permitting.
Onion Flakes. Only ingredient is our Certified Naturally Grown onions. $10.00per 6 oz Resealable Pouch

The Pasturage of Montague
Hi peeps (it’s that time of year, right? where I can call you peeps?), Easter is around the bend. Do you celebrate? If so, we’d be honored to supply your table. We have all sorts of lamb, including bone-in and boneless leg of lamb, rack of lamb, bone-in and boneless shoulder. For the smaller crowds or appetizers, we have delectable lamb loin chops along with lamb snack sticks and jerky to nosh on. In my family, Easter breakfast was always coffee cake, hardboiled eggs and sausage. We have pork sausage (breakfast links and patties, Italian, hot Italian, brats) and lamb sausage (breakfast links, spicy breakfast links, brats) aplenty. Then there’s bacon, which really needs no season, holiday or excuse to crave. Take a gander at our list: http://www.thepasturage.com/order. We are delighted to serve you.

The Pasturage of Montague
I’m still waiting for the “lamb” in the weather. It’s been rather like a lion lately. However, our ewes have dropped 9 lambs so far. They must have missed the memo. No matter. They always amaze me with their resilience. Dan has started calling one of them “Kiss” after the 80’s hair band because its face is half black and half white.

The Pasturage of Montague
It’s nearly March! We’ve had a bonafide winter, for which I am glad. It made it easy to keep the animals happy because the ground is frozen. Now they only have to slog through mud for 2 months, not 4 (or more). Feeding them is easier, too. Watering, however, will become easier with spring, which I am looking forward to. I have been enjoying listening to the birds as I do chores.
We have all your goods at www.thepasturage.com/order where you’ll see everything including ingredients, price per pound, average price per package and practices and certifications.
Thanks!
Funding update: thank you for calling your representative.  Kathy Voth, editor of On Pasture, writes “Thanks to the alarms sounded by producers across the country some reimbursements may be on the way. It appears that $20 million in existing contracts funded through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) will be honored and funds were unfrozen to pay those obligations. This tells me that farmers and ranchers have a degree of influence they shouldn’t be afraid to wield.
But as Mike Lavendar, policy director for the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition says, ‘It’s a pittance.'”
So.
We’re not out of the woods.
Good thing we’re into agroforestry, aka silvopasture.

Tortoise & Hare Farm of North Muskegon
New! Our 2025 CSA and Farm Card info is up at the Farm Store website. If you are considering joining a CSA for 2025 take a look, offering an Early Order Sale Price right now. https://tortoise-hare-farm.square.site/s/order#6
Established in 2018, Tortoise & Hare Farm grows a wide variety of Certified Naturally Grown vegetables. We are dedicated to growing clean, safe, high quality vegetables without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. We offer a summer CSA and weekly farm stand at the farm (3940 N. Weber Rd, Muskegon, MI 49445).

The Mannor Farm of Hesperia
We will be offering our CSA  card again this year.
We only offer a Farm Card/Free Choice CSA Membership.  This type of CSA allows you to choose how you would like to spend your CSA dollars. You receive a prepaid card.  With it, you can purchase locally naturally grown veggies, dried produce, meat, or eggs from us.  You can pre-order for pick-up at one of the several local farmers markets that we attend.  Or come to the farmers market and purchase directly from us.
You can purchase a card for as much as you want but there is a $100 minimum.  Once you have a card, additional funds may be added to your card at any time.
Why should you do this?

  • Flexible; you buy what you want, when you want
  • No weekly commitment
  • Easy to use
  • Cards can be used to purchase everything we offer at our farmers market locations without pre-ordering.
  • Your card balance never expires
  • You can check your balance at any time
  • You increase your buying power by 10 – 20%

Why are we doing this?

  • Interest rate on borrowed money has gone up drastically in the last 4 years.
  • We must purchase most of our seeds and supplies during the time when our sales are the lowest or not at all.
  • Inflation…the cost of our supplies have gone up over the last 6 years
  • Without the additional funds we will be forced to cut back on our operation

If you are interested, you can go to Purchase a CSA Card for more information and to purchase a membership.  If you would like you can email us your info to purchase a membership.
Please share this information with your family and friends.
We thank you for your business and time.  We look forward to your continued support.
Thanks,
Dan & Linda Mannor
