Vendors Attending Saturday September 23rd:

The Woven Farm of Whitehall
Happy Monday!
September is cruising right on by and the field is showing signs of slowing down ( for summer crops anyway!)
In the hustle and bustle of the season, I forgot to mention to folks that I’ve picked up a full time job in hopes of getting a deep well dripped on the farm sooner, rather than later. It’s been a balancing act keeping the farm thriving while simultaneously stepping away from the majority of the day, but we are making it happen!
With that said, I’ll be sticking with walk up sales for the next several weeks to make market harvest a bit easier!
I’ve been working hard to flip many summer crops into fall roots and greens in hopes that there will be veggies well into the snowy season – this weekend while in the field I found a handful of wooly bear caterpillars that featured lots of brown, leading to signs that there will be a mild winter (and an extended season ahead!)
Looking forward to seeing you all Saturday!
Cheers to good growing!

Pine Row Farm of Rothbury
Hello :-),
I’m looking forward to fall after a fairly hectic pace all summer. There is usually a brief reprieve from flies and other summer nuisances before the shoveling and fight for liquid water sets in. The birds in the brooder should be able to tolerate the lower temperatures in 4-6 weeks. A minimum of 70 degrees is my target temperature for them this week.
We will accept orders until 5pm on Friday. If you miss the deadline or prefer to shop in person, I do bring a selection of what’s available every Saturday. I will try to get totals emailed out by 9:30pm on Friday. If you don’t get a response from me, please contact me. We accept cash or check payable to Pine Row Farm.

The Pasturage of Montague
Hello all!  I hope the closure of highway 31 didn’t deter you last weekend.  It looks like construction will continue for a couple of weeks so plan accordingly: you won’t want to miss our blowout freezer sale!  We’ll be highlighting items over the coming weeks to help make room in our freezer.  This week, we’re offering lamb sirloin steaks at half price!  That’s only $8.75 per pound!  Stock up for those dinners when you cook to impress the company. As always, our pre-order form is the best way to see what we have and get what you want! The Woven Farm of Whitehall
Happy September All!
The season is cruising on by! I am eager to continue to welcome some sweet summer favorites from the field, as well as to begin to welcome in some fall favorites as well. While I never want to wish this sunshine away, I have my fingers crossed for a bit of rain to move some more crops along to the market table. The field has really slowed down with all of this heat and little rain. I am crossing my fingers that the upcoming fall forecasts will promote production in the field!
This week I will be at market with an assortment of veggies for walk up sale.
Looking forward to sharing in the harvest this week!

Hello! We will not be at Sweetwater this weekend. We will be at Muskegon in our usual place, stall 148. We will return to Sweetwater on 9/25.
With the onset of more fall-like weather, I’ve been thinking about Thanksgiving. It’s never too early to reserve a turkey; we’ve started a list because so many people have been asking. Ballpark estimate is $110-$160 per bird, and they’ll weigh between 12-18 lbs (she said confidently).
Have a great week!

RETURNING SOON
The Pasturage of Montague

Crow’s Nest Garlic of Muskegon
Crow’s Nest Garlic is back again!
We will have 3 varieties for walk up only sale this year
MUSIC is our all-purpose porcelain variety with 4-5 very large cloves per head. Especially good for roasting or processing.
SIBERIAN garlic has the highest allicin content of any garlic – this is the compound that makes garlic SO delicious and good for you!
CARPATHIAN garlic is my personal favorite… beautiful purple streaked clove wrappers peel very easily and the flavor is incredible.
Thanks again for your support!

Pine Row Farm of Rothbury
Hello :-),
We received a call from the post office before 8am on Wednesday morning. Our “quackage” had arrived. The lady at the post office was giving the ducklings water from a cup while she waited for us to get there! They all arrived safe and sound, and THIRSTY. While they were drinking plenty of water, it took them another day to add food to their diet. Ducklings always seem to be perpetually happy, and are fun to watch as they grab a bite of food, wash it down with water, and repeat. They also waddle over to inspect the waterer every time it’s refilled.

Life composed: what would that look like? Certainly not autumn. This begins our busiest time of year which won’t let up until after Thanksgiving.  The days are shorter which yields less regrowth of the pasture. Plus those cute little lambies are now big teenagers with an appetite to match. The turkeys are not solely dependent on forage but they sure act like they are. Don’t even get me started on the pigs: they’re omnivorous almost to a fault. But what can I say? I love everything about my sheep and turkeys. The pigs… well… let’s just say they sure taste great.
As always, our pre-order form is the best way to see what we have and get what you want! Find it here: https://form.jotform.com/231266729632056 or you can always call/text 231 288 6112 or email thepasturage@gmail.com
Just a small sampling of our lamb & pork products from our preorder form:

Monday Preorder News
September? Whoa, slow yer roll there, summer!
Crow’s Nest is back with garlic!
Laughing Tree Bakery needs preorders by Tuesday 6pm (rumor has it that Hilde herself will be here!)
Blackbird Farm needs your veggie bag preorders by Thursday.
Funny Farm needs preorders for blackberries.

Vendors Attending Saturday September 2nd:

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
Thanks so much to all of you who came out to the market this past Saturday and made the day a success for us. We are looking forward to seeing you again at this Saturday’s market with all manner of good things to eat!
This week we are again offering for pre-order our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least five different vegetables with a combined value around $25. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $20. This week’s bag will potentially contain a selection of some of the following: lettuce, carrots, herbs, sweet peppers, summer squash, zucchini, tomatoes, potatoes, and garlic. To order your Blackbird Farms Veggie Bag, please email us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com by noon on Thursday. We will then send you an invoice via Square. Payment can also be made via cash or check (payable to Blackbird Farms).
In addition, this season we are experimenting with offering four-week-long trial shares for folks who are curious about the CSA model but not quite ready to commit to a full season. These will be offered in four-week sessions (basically the months of September, and October), with pick-up on the farm on Thursday evenings. Trial shares will be offered as either full shares ($140) or small shares ($75). The sign-up form is available online.
We also plan to have many items for walk-up sales–watch for more information in Friday’s newsletter.
Thanks so much! We’re looking forward to seeing friends old and new this Saturday!

Blackbird Farm

Funny Farm of Grant
Hello, all. Since we had no luck with our bean plantings this year, I
decided to check with the Kaufman’s of Fremont, the Amish farm that attended Sweetwater a few seasons ago, to see if I could get a quantity. They were willing to work with me so I will have at least a half bushel for sale on Saturday. If you’re interested in a pound or 2 or 3, let me know.
They are a nice sized, tender, tasty bean and first pick of this
planting. Always a good thing. I have a nice harvest of blackberries,
too. Cucumbers have finished for the season, what I bring this week is it.
Also on the list:
Cabbage and Napa cabbage,
kohlrabis, the Giant kind
kale,
Swiss chard(?)
White onions
Potatoes, red, golden and nicola
carrots
beets
Cucumbers and/or pickles last of season
Parsley
I will have some big blackberries, please preorder.
Updates if needed will post on Friday.
Preorder requests: text # 734 945 0720 and I
will respond to confirm the order.
Thanks for a good year!

Pine Row Farm of Rothbury
Hello :-),
I have been asked quite a few times about insect populations this year, so here’s my observations from the farm. Butterflies seem a bit scarce; moths are not. The firefly population is down from last season. Bald faced hornets are about as plentiful as last year. Honey bees are holding their own and going after star thistle, an invasive species that apparently has nectar even in a drought. I’m grateful for that. They’re clearly not insects, but the bat population has actually increased this year. I’ve enjoyed watching them. And while I hadn’t seen a cow bird in decades, we’ve seen a few this summer.

Summer! What a glorious time. We weaned our lambs from the ewes and they’re both feasting on the mid-summer pasture which has mostly recovered from the drought.  Our pigs are devouring poison ivy, multi-flora rose and honeysuckle. I admit I encourage this behavior with a little well-placed grain. We’re hosting a turkey tour in early October so stay tuned for updates to see these prehistoric creatures chirring on grass. Anyone with a pre-order this week will receive a complimentary reusable, bright orange bag, brand new from CVS.

Monday Preorder News
Blackbird Farm needs your veggie bag preorders by Thursday.
Funny Farm needs preorders for blackberries.
Everyone attending appreciates preorders, whenever possible!
Watch for the Friday newsletter for updated veggie lists!

Vendors Attending Saturday August 26th:

Blackbird Farm of Coopersville
We are looking forward to seeing you again at this Saturday’s market with all manner of good things to eat!
This week we are again offering for pre-order our pre-selected, pre-packed bags of fresh vegetables. These bags are something akin to our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. We assemble bags of our highest quality veggies based on whatever is fresh and in season for that week. In the bag, we aim to have some combination and quantity of at least five different vegetables with a combined value around $25. We also include a brief note from Farmer Greg and a farm-tested recipe. Each bag costs $20. This week’s bag will potentially contain a selection of some of the following: lettuce, mini-cabbages, carrots, herbs, green peppers, summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, and garlic.

The Woven Farm of Whitehall
Happy Monday!
Sorry that I missed everyone last week – a communication error on my part! I will however be back this week with an assortment of produce for walk up sales!
Tomatoes and peppers are very slowly coming on (but will hopefully be making their first appearance on the market table!)
Blueberries are also still growing! This may be the last week for them though.
Check back Friday for a full list of what will be on the market table!
Cheers to good growing!

Pine Row Farm of Rothbury
Hello :-),
I have been asked quite a few times about insect populations this year, so here’s my observations from the farm.

The season is half way thru and the garden is still growing although some
stuff is done. Summer squash has run it’s course for the season. But
there’s still lots of stuff just coming on. We should have more cherry
tomatoes coming on in the next couple weeks and the second plantings of
cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli are doing well. And we’re spotting
lots of winter squash among the leaves! So here’s what I expect to have
this week.
Cabbage and Napa cabbage,
kohlrabis,
dino and curly kale,
Swiss chard(?)
White onions
Potatoes of many colors

carrots

I’ll have to see how many we get this week. They are producing many
berries right now! If I find anything else, I’ll bring it too! As
always, feel free to place a request at my text # 734 945 0720 and I
will respond to confine the order. Thanks for all your support this year!
