Attending this Saturday’s market:

Funny Farm of Grant

Sweetwater Customers: At this point we are not sure Funny Farm is attending. For those who haven’t heard their farm was hit pretty hard by the storm last Saturday. Their back porch was blown away and Barb walked out the back door, fell 4′ and broke her wrist. Also several greenhouses were destroyed. We are taking up a collection at the coffee table this Saturday to help with expenses not covered by their insurance, and will be talking to them about getting a group of us together to assist with a cleanup day.

(From last weeks newsletter: Sign up for our CSA this Saturday, get the details at our booth. We’ll have plenty of eggs, including Turkey Eggs.  Also, dried mushrooms, dried sweet peppers, crab apple jelly, herbs and sea salt and any shallots or onions we might have left. )

Five Oaks Farm CSA of Montague

Welcome to all the new members this week -we’ve been busy planting vegetables for you! With  snow peas, spinach, lettuces, kales, onions, radish, & mixed greens in the ground and many more transplants waiting their turn in the greenhouse, we’re gearing up for a great year. If want to join our CSA we have many options to suit your needs and your budget, including half price shares for Bridge Card families. We are partnering with Sweetwater Center for Organic Opportunity for our Good Food for All fund; your tax deductible contribution to this project will help families who could use it afford our CSA. There is more info about this project and our farm at http://fiveoaksfarmcsa.weebly.com/ , and we’ll have info available at the market.

Scholl Farm of Montague

We’ll have our free range non-gmo frozen whole chicken and eggs.

Laughing Tree Bakery of Hart

The snow has finally left our little hillside after the thorough drenching we received last night. All of that after great chunks of ice descended from the sky on a somewhat treacherous drive home.  So we prepare for another week, which will include zesting oranges again for our Cranberry Orange Almond loaf for Easter weekend.  This bread keeps well and is great fresh or toasted all week long, but you have to cut it thinly so the cranberries carmelize and the almonds  brown in almondy frangrence! This loaf will be available in both stores and at markets.

Once again a note on natural leavening: The fermentation time (when bread is still dough)  increases the overall digestibility of grains—in fact without this long fermentation most grains are very hard for our bodies to digest.  Natural leavening (fermentation) pre-digests gluten and helps our bodies access the numerous vitamins and minerals that grains offer.  Tell your friends about naturally leavened bread!!  Wahooo!

Meadow View Goat Dairy & Farm of Fremont

New! Marco is our latest creation and we think it will be a hit! Similar to Dutch Kase but pasteurized and vacuum sealed, it comes in Pepper, Sage, Italian & Garlic. Try a sample!

Chevreʹ  Fresh chevre with a nice spreading consistency, perfect for sandwich toppings and cooking. Cherry Capital Foods of Traverse City says  ” The chèvre produced by Meadow View has a pitch perfect acidity on the palate that becomes gently sweet and milky with a grassy note on the finish.”

Seasoned Chevreʹ

Our fresh Chevre available in your favorite flavorings: Blueberry Vanilla (great on a morning bagel!) Hickory-smoked bacon Bits, Garlic, Italian Herb, & Hot Pepper

Feta

A smooth and creamy feta which is low in salt and rich in fresh goat milk flavor. The brining process gives feta cheese a salty, tangy flavor and a crumbly consistency. Feta cheese can be served as a table cheese, used in baking savory dishes, or served as an appetizer or in salads. The classic Greek salad is made with Feta cheese. In crumbles or cubes for easy slicing.

Dutch Kase

A Meadow View Dairy original! If you are looking for a nicely aged but milder version of our Tomme, this is the cheese for you. Vacuum sealed without mold and aged at least 60 days.

Tomme de Fremont

Our first aged cheese is quickly becoming a customer favorite! Developed from a French recipe, Tomme is a lower fat mold ripened cheese, aged at least 60 days. This gives the cheese a stronger flavor & firmer texture than the fresh Chevres, perfect for slicing.

Other items from our farm:

New! Homemade Egg Noodles! Made with certified organic flour and our own eggs-YUM!

We’ll also have eggs from our free-range, GMO-free flock.  http://www.meadowviewgoatdairy.com/home

Earthscape Farm of Hesperia

BEEF!  We should have all cuts of beef this week!  AND it is continuing to rise in price.  Our ground beef has taken the big jump this month.  That’s because we can get almost as much money for our steers if we sold them live as we can when we go to the extra hassle of butchering them out to sell at Market!  I know, it’s ridiculous. We hope to have some ground beef specials soon.  Our cattle eat $600 worth of hay per week this time of year!  And getting them out on grazing pasture will be later than usual because of the cold weather and all the snow.  They are enjoying the sunshine and exercise, and calving has begun – 11 new calves now!

Zen Cream-organic apricot kernel oil infused with calming flowers from summer’s garden make the base for this relaxing cream.  Soothes the skin and the soul.  We love it as a cream to soothe our littlest ones, but the grown ups at our house love it too.
EGGS
Our chickens are fully free range, and have been out on every inch of bare ground scratching.  They are supplied non-GMO grain.
We have great program available through our farm.  It’s a market based CSA, and allows customers to choose their investment amount and what they receive in produce.  Please ask us about it, the program is almost full for the season.
Another facet of this program is community based food support.  In partnership with our community, we have a community fund on our farm. We believe that everyone should have access to clean food and water.  If you or someone you know could benefit from receiving produce from our farm without any/or reduced out of pocket expense, just ask us for an application.  Or, if you would like to learn more about how you can contribute, please pick up a brochure or ask about it.
Please help us welcome our wonderful intern, Dana Wloch, to beautiful west Michigan.  Dana is spending the season on our farm learning about sustainable farming.

See you on Saturday!

Kasza Sugar Bush of Shelby

Along with our bottled syrup, we have also expanded our line of maple products this summer to include the following:

Maple Cream – this is maple syrup condensed, cooled, and stirred into a beautiful buttery-like spread excellent on bagels, toast, doughnuts, winter squash, or a glaze on meat (esp. fish, and venison). The best thing about this is that it is totally natural only pure maple syrup.

Maple Candy – an excellent treat for someone’s sweet tooth. Simply pure maple syrup cooked down to only sugar and minerals remaining with enough moisture to hold the sugar in beautiful little maple leaf shaped candies.

Maple Granulated Sugar – is much like Maple Candy but without moisture. This can be used in place of white sugar as a natural sweetener along with the maple taste (esp. on oatmeal)

Maple Sugar-Coated Almonds and Pecans – a healthy sweet and crunchy treat.  These make great gifts if they don’t get eaten before that!!!

Please stop by and check out all these 100% natural products for yourself. We would be very happy to answer any questions or visit our web www.kaszasugarbush.com Looking forward to seeing you Saturday!
