The Pasturage of Montague
As the drought continues, we are losing trees in our windbreak that I thought were fairly well established, our pollinator planting (that the conservation district was impressed with the survival of 4 species!) is wilting, and the locust trees are turning yellow. I have no wish to swing into a flood, but I’ll take whatever comes. What I love about Sweetwater is the camaraderie of the vendors. It is comforting to know others face similar struggles and to collaborate to help each other as we are able. I’d love to see the market thrive. Also, we have been unable, so far, to find help to cover Sweetwater come July when my Mom has surgery. I will miss going to Sweetwater myself, and it looks as if we will not be able to do anything other than offer pre-order options through Anita at Laughing Tree. (Did I mention the fabulous collaboration?) All that is to say: if you know of someone that would be able to work for us, please let me know. Plus, pray for rain!
Our very handy dandy pre-order form is here: https://form.jotform.com/231266729632056
You can always call or text me at 231 288 6112 or email thepasturage@gmail.com.

Julie

The Pasturage of Montague
We need a good soaker. If you have a secret jig to break open the skies, please dance now! After a grueling week of making hay and fixing equipment, we are ready for a rain recharge.  The sheep weathered the heat in the hedgerow, and we wear hats and drink lots of water, but our poor red clover has nowhere to go. The grasses don’t show drought stress as noticeably as the wilting clover. It’s not dire, so far, and we have plans in place in case it does get drastic, but we sure would appreciate 1″ of rain over 10 hours every Wednesday night. See what you can do, would’ya?

Pine Row Farm of Rothbury
Hello :-),
We got a sprinkle of rain today (6-3). It’s not just seasonal vegetation that’s hurting at this point. The mulberry trees are stressed to the point of dropping their crop for this year, and they are a dependable source of food for wildlife and people.

The Pasturage of Montague
What a spectacular weekend!
RE: Braunschweiger. Technically, I guess we don’t have Braunschweiger. We have liver sausage because it is not smoked. It is cooked so you can eat it as is but it won’t have a smoky flavor. I do apologize to all of you that showed up for the sausage and I did not deliver! Please come back again! We have plenty at the farm.
We are hiring!  Specifically, we are hiring sales people for Sweetwater. To apply, use this link: https://form.jotform.com/231295111349048
There was some confusion regarding our online form. We are eliminating the downloadable price list because a lot of people had trouble with it. Instead, I created a form accessible at this link ( https://form.jotform.com/231266729632056) for you to use. This way, you can always see what we have in stock and easily place an order.
Thank you!
Julie

Did you know? Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. (https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/memorial-day-history)
We have a new product!  Braunschweiger!  For those of you not in the habit of eating this smoked liver sausage, you are in for a treat!  Liver is a nutritional powerhouse.  Many people know that but find the texture off-putting.  If this is you, try braunschweiger.  You get all the nutrition without the characteristic consistency.  As a child, my German grandmother always had some in her fridge.  Now that I’m an adult, I enjoy it with a thin layer of onion and a squirt of good mustard on a slice of Laughing Tree Third Coast Three Seed.  Zum Wohl!
We will also have all our usual products along with us on Saturday.

Greetings, friends!
Now that we are approaching Memorial Day, we can be increasingly confident that we can plant out our vegetable gardens without risk of losing them to frost. To help you get your garden going, at this Saturday’s market we will have for sale all manner of herb and vegetable starts, including heirloom and cherry tomatoes. You can use our online form to pre-order for pick up at this Saturday’s market (deadline: noon on Friday). We will also have plants for walk-up sales. Please note: This will likely be the last week that we will have our full line of plants available, so if there is something that you are particularly interested in, this is the week to get it.
Not sure how to get started? On May 23 Farmer Greg will be teaching a free (with donations appreciated) introductory organic gardening class at Blackbird Farms (5213 Roosevelt, Coopersville, 49404), from 6 to 8 p.m. The class will cover all the basic information you will need to set the foundation for a successful growing season this year: seeding and transplanting, fertilizing and watering, weeding and pest control, and harvesting. Though the class is free, for planning purposes we ask that you e-mail us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com to let us know if you’ll be attending.
Also, if all goes well this week, there is a very good chance that we will have the first of our spring produce available this Saturday, for walk-up sales only. This may include: leeks, green garlic, rhubarb, Asian greens, and lettuce. Please check Friday’s newsletter for confirmation.

The Pasturage of Montague
Did you know? Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. (https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/memorial-day-history)
We have a new product!  Braunschweiger!  For those of you not in the habit of eating this smoked liver sausage, you are in for a treat!  Liver is a nutritional powerhouse.  Many people know that but find the texture off-putting.  If this is you, try braunschweiger.  You get all the nutrition without the characteristic consistency.  As a child, my German grandmother always had some in her fridge.  Whenever we would go to her house, she would serve us “mushy meat” sandwiches.  It never occurred to me that some people might find the title “mushy meat” to be suspect, and its contents even more suspicious.  To me, it was a lot easier to say, and straight up delicious.  Now that I’m an adult, I still eat mushy meat sandwiches, but I’ve added a thin layer of onion and a squirt of good mustard on a slice of Laughing Tree Third Coast Three Seed.  Zum Wohl!
We will not be at Sweetwater this weekend. My Mom and Dad will be over at Muskegon in stall 148 for any meat emergencies. We’ll be back en force for Memorial day with “sheep dogs” (lamb hot dogs), bratwurst and other grillable goodies.

The Market Soapbox:
Permit me to reprint a short quote from a new book on farming by Kristin Kimball called Good Husbandry:
“Some people say farming is the most wholesome job in the universe. I say having a farm is more like having a gambling problem. A farm is a living, breathing slot machine, doling out just enough reward at exactly the right moment to keep you coming back for more. Farmers are professional hopers, wafting supplication toward ancient gods we don’t believe in. We hope in order to ward off disease and accident; or for rain, but not too much; or no rain, but not for too long. If frost threatens early in the fall or late in the spring, we double down on hope, trying to generate it with the degree or two of heat that is the difference between death and another few weeks of life, between a good harvest and none at all. When we win those bets, it’s magic, like making something out of nothing. When we lose, the chips that get swept off the table can be measured in both love and money.”
Please remember when you place a preorder you are helping your farmers take some of the gamble out of farming. Your preorder is something they can count on in an occupation that doesn’t offer them many sure bets.
Thanks, see you at the market!

If you find that this is not the case, feel free to resort to the tried and true method of email. Or just show up on Saturday. There is a slight chance that I will be sold out of your desired product, but I try to be smarter than the AI formulas on the internet that predict shopping behavior. Sometimes I fail.
