Sweetwater Holiday Market Week #2!

This Saturday you will find more locally grown, crafted, cooked, sewn and baked products for giving to your loved ones this Christmas than anywhere else in West Michigan!

Not to mention some darn good organically grown greens, garlic and more!

At this week’s market:

Maple Moon Farm of Shelby

Thanks to the sunshine we were able to pick greens!

From the hoophouse:  We’ll have kale, spinach, lettuce, arugula, swiss chard, turnips with greens as well as each sold separately, and beets with greens.

Veggies in Storage: Potatoes, garlic, onions, winter squash, carrots and pie pumpkins.

We’ll also have culinary herbs we dried, for flavorful meals all winter.  Summer Savory, Parsley, and Basil.

New this week: JAM!  We made jam with berries we picked at the peak of ripeness this summer.  The jam is sweetened only with the fruit itself and a touch of local honey and made with natural citrus pectin.  Strawberry and Raspberry. A perfect holiday gift!

BEEF ~  BEEF SALE is continuing:  Beef Hearts are $2 per lb.

Other cuts available this week:

  • New York Strip and Rib Eye Steaks
  • Rolled Rump, Arm and Chuck Roasts
  • Stew Meat & Short Ribs

Our steers are on lush rotational pastures from May to November.  They get all our quality hay they can eat, plus a little home-grown and ground- on-the-farm grain mostly in winter. Feeding cows small amounts of good grains are like humans eating small portions of dessert.  It’s ok for them as long as grass and legumes are their main diet.  The steers are hung to age and processed by Ebel’s Meats in Falmouth, a family-run USDA operation.

ORGANIC OLIVE OIL from Palestine! 500 ML Bottles.  Organic, Extra Virgin and Cold Pressed.  This oil is imported by Higher Grounds Coffee.

HIGHER GROUNDS COFFEE in 1# bags.  Certified organic, Fair Trade. Various types, beans or ground, dark or light roast, full caf, half caf or decaf. Try a cup at the Sweetwater Market table!

Olson Farm of Shelby

This week stop by and sample a free pancake with my own made on the farm syrup! My Taste of Spring Maple Syrup comes in 12 oz gift bottles and quarts and makes the perfect Chrismas gift. 100% Grass Fed Beef: Only one quarter not yet spoken for, let me know if interested. Quarters of my 1-year old Galloway & Simental cross beef. Call for more info: 231.861.4903.

Come sample our newest jam creations:  Apple Pie Jelly, Special Late Harvest Rubel (a wild heirloom blueberry) and Smooth Operator Red Plum, along with many others.

In addition to Grassfield’s famous Dutch process Goudas & Cheddars, we will now carry a selection of cheeses from Cowslip Creamery! Located on Lubbers Farm in West Michigan, Cowslip is dedicated to making excellent cheese the old fashioned way, by hand, using fresh milk from cows grazing sustainable pastures. This week try either the artisan Phocas, or Brigid. Also we’ll have a selection of delicious Flatbread Crackers from the Lubber’s on-farm Little Rooster Bakery!

Last but not least

We are excited to announce that Sweetwater Board Member Tom Wagner’s second book, Work and Hope: Further Thoughts on Living Faith has been published by Muskegon County Cooperating Churches. The volume is primarily a “best of compilation of his “Gleanings” essays regularly featured in the ecumenical organization’s bimonthly newsletter BRANCHES. The book also features illustrations by Muskegon artist Mat Moore.

Following is an excerpt from his essay “Winter Vespers”:

“West of our house and outbuildings stand several acres of woodland. Particularly on our rare cloudless days I find myself pausing to gaze at the forest of empty tree limbs silhouetted against the glow of dusk. Such moments grant me a sense of clarity and peace.

What draws my attention is the way the fading light shows off the intricate patterns of the trees under these conditions. During the growing season the leaves draw a green veil across the horizon. It takes the autumn winds and rains to restore our sunsets. Snowstorms transform the woods into a mere collection of phantoms. Cloudy days make the view a study of black on gray. Broken clouds painted with the fiery hues of dying light create a drama that overwhelms the naked forest. Yet in the cold, clear glow of winter twilight I become aware of small details of form. Color and blemishes no longer distract me. I observe each twig, how it connects to each branch and each branch connects to each trunk. Each tree, rooted in the earth joins others to create the forest. The fading sun has made this vision possible on so many levels. The scene reminds me that we as creatures are part of something much larger than ourselves. This is my moment of clarity.” (p. 35.)

This is a lovely volume and would make a wonderful Christmas gift. MCCC is publishing the collection as a fundraiser. The first limited edition of 200 copies is hand sewn in a soft cover by the author. Each copy is numbered and autographed. Copies are available for a $15.00 per copy donation to :
