Blackbird Farms
Coopersville, Michigan
We’re back this week with a variety of herb, flower, and vegetable plants for your garden! Note that this is likely our final week for plant sales, so if you’re interested in anything, Saturday is the time to buy.
Due to capacity issues, we will be doing **walk-up sales only** for our plant sales at Sweetwater this May (payment via cash, check, or credit card). That said, we fully understand that not everyone is able, willing, or ready for in-person connection at the market yet, and we want to make sure that we are able to serve these individuals as well. The best way for us to do that is via pre-orders that can be **picked up, contact-free, at our farm in Coopersville** at a mutually convenient time in May. For more information on this option, please e-mail us at hello.blackbirdfarms@gmail.com, and we will send you the link to our online order form. We understand that this may not be ideal, but we do appreciate your patience as we navigate a busy month ahead with limited staff, time, and resources. 🙂
Thank you for your understanding, and we hope to see you at Sweetwater this Saturday!
Greg and Shel

The Pasturage LLC of Montague
Julie Engel owns and operates The Pasturage, LLC. Our pigs and sheep range on 40 acres in Montague, MI. The pigs eat certified organic grain (75% corn, 25% soy), are born on the farm, primarily roam in the woods, and get hay and baleage in the winter. The sheep are 100% grass-fed, are moved daily to a new paddock in the summer, and are also born on the farm.
Cut of the week: In this space each week I would like to highlight some lesser known cuts so y’all can switch it up from sausage every so often (no offense, I love sausage too). Let’s start with lamb. Like, the whole animal. Once, I had a housemate that made grilled cheese by toasting the bread, then putting cheese on it, then microwaving it. If you consider yourself a more capable cook than my former housemate, you can cook lamb. The cut of lamb will determine the cooking method to a certain extent. Generally speaking, cuts closer to the top of the animal are more tender and require less cooking time. These include tenderloin, loin, loin and rib chops, half and whole racks, and I would put kidneys and liver in this category. Then come cuts slightly lower down like leg steaks and roasts and also sirloin steaks and roasts, plus, in my opinion, the heart. Then come the braise-worthy prizes like neck roasts, shanks, shoulder steaks and roasts, brisket, and tongue. Finally, there’s always ground and stew meat with which you can span practically raw to, well, stew. Broadening your palette of cookery will please your palate!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR How to Pre-Order (for both Drive Through & Park & Walk-in)
1. Look over the list. Each vendor has a unique deadline for when they need to receive your pre-order depending on their product. Send your pre-order by email to each vendor you want to order from, within their required deadlines.
2. Vendors will respond back by no later than Friday before market day with an order confirmation and an invoice that in most cases will allow you to pre-pay for your order. If a vendor is not set up to take payment online they will accept checks (preferred) or cash in a sealed envelope on market day pickup.
3. Market Day for Park & Walk-in. Please see the map for where you will need to park and enter the market space. You may pick up your pre-orders from each vendor & purchase from additional vendors who have extra products.
4. Market Day For Drive Through Pre-Orders: Please see the market map with arrows indicating which way you should plan to approach the market. You are basically going to come in to the market the same way as before and then circle the perimeter of the vendor area, exiting the same way you come in. We will also have signs to help point you in the right direction.
5. (Drive Through) Using a sheet of paper at least 8.5 x 11, please list all of the vendors you have orders with in black marker (or something as visible), large enough for vendors to see it clearly. Please put your first & last name at the top of the list. Tape or hold up the list to the side window or front windshield where it will be most visible.
6. Have your trunk, or designated area of your car ready to receive your goods. A cooler is suggested for refrigerated & frozen items.
7. As you are driving through, each vendor will bring your order to your vehicle and place it in the trunk or other designated space, and collect payment if you have not paid in advance. Again, please have checks (preferred) or cash in a sealed envelope with your name and the name of the vendor on the outside of it.
Covid Policy. As of May 29th, even though there is now no requirement for vaccinated adults to wear masks, all vendors will have masks and will wear them when customers wear masks. In this time of transition we ask that everyone be cautious about distancing and please don’t attend if you don’t feel well! Thanks!
